Heavy Equipment Operator – MSW Transfer Station

East Central Solid Waste Commission (ECSWC) Location: Hinckley Transfer Station

ECSWC is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team at the Hinckley Transfer Station. This position plays a critical role in safely and efficiently loading municipal solid waste (MSW) into transfer trailers and supporting daily site operations.

Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a wheel loader to load MSW into transfer trailers, managing waste on the tipping floor, and assisting with on‑site movement and positioning of semi‑trailers. This is an on‑site, non‑CDL position, but candidates must be comfortable backing, spotting, and maneuvering tractor‑trailers within a transfer station environment.

This role also includes limited heavy equipment repair and maintenance to keep operations running smoothly.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Starting Pay: $25.35 per hour, DOE
  • Benefits: Medical, dental, and participation in a pension plan
  • Full‑time, year‑round position with stable hours and reliable weekly schedule

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate a wheel loader to load MSW into transfer trailers with accuracy and efficiency
  • Manage waste on the tipping floor, including pushing, leveling, and staging materials
  • Back, position, and move transfer trailers around the site (no CDL required; on‑site only)
  • Perform basic equipment repairs, including hoses, fittings, minor electrical, and daily maintenance tasks
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and report issues promptly
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas
  • Follow all ECSWC safety protocols and communication procedures
  • Work collaboratively with other operators, spotters, and supervisors to maintain efficient throughput

 Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience operating wheel loaders or similar heavy equipment
  • Ability to safely maneuver and back tractor‑trailers in tight spaces
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform minor repairs
  • Ability to work in fast‑paced, high‑volume environments
  • Strong commitment to safety and reliable attendance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in MSW, C&D, or recycling facility operations
  • Familiarity with elevated tipping floors and trailer load‑out procedures
  • Experience with excavators, skid steers, or other equipment
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and basic troubleshooting
