Job Summary

Assist with on-site Recycle-Yard collections and the collection and handling of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in accordance with regulations. Interact with and educate residents on Recycle-Yard and curbside recycling and household hazardous wastes. Assist Solid Waste Administrator with efforts to increase general recycling and HHW rates within the County.16 hours per week; part-time seasonal:
Monday 11:30 to 7:30
Wednesday 8-4:30
Last Saturday of the monthSpecial Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of chemistry, materials safety, recycling, and environmental issues.
  • Must be able to commit to working a varied schedule including late on Mondays and the last Saturday of the month.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in directing, organizing, and processing residential recycle-yard drop-offs.
  • Routine recycle yard drop-off materials handling and organization.
  • Communicates with and educate residents on best recycle-yard and curbside recycling practices.
  • Works on projects to increase business recycling within the county.
  • Assists the HHW Facility Coordinator and staff with unloading and pre-sort of materials that come into the Household Hazardous Waste facility.
  • Sort, pack, and maintain proper storage of paint, oil, oil filters, fluorescent bulbs, antifreeze, propane cylinders, mercury thermostats and other non-regulated and universal wastes.
  • Process items for reuse; stock and maintain the HHW product reuse area.
  • Perform cleaning and other related activities necessary to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly warehouse work environment in compliance with OSHA and other regulations.
  • Maintain a constant awareness of chemical hazards and safe handling procedures. Attend training as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Desired Minimum Qualifications

Desired Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED; enrollment in a post-secondary educational institution working towards certification or degree in an Environmental, Chemical, Natural Resources, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience; general computer/word processing skills.Special Qualifications:
•           Knowledge of chemistry, materials safety, recycling, and environmental issues.
•           Must be able to commit to working a varied schedule including late on Mondays and the last Saturday of the month.

  • The work environment is a combination of general office and a warehouse and outdoor yard setting. The field environment is one that will frequently be uncomfortable, being hot and cold and/or humid in the summer and cold and wet in the other seasons. The noise level can range from moderately quiet in the office to loud and noisy in the warehouse and outdoor yard.
